What is a 'Women's Job'?

Image
The other day I was in the kitchen, packing lunch in a hurry & my husband shouts from our room - If you're going to be late I am not going to wait for you. My cook immediately tells me - We women have always so much work to do, so easy for Bhaiya to get up in the morning, get ready & leave. Another instance I recollect is my mom in-law telling me, I'll teach you all nice dishes so that you can cook once I am gone, also today you’ve a cook tomorrow what if you don't find cooks. Logic wise it was correct but she NEVER turned to her son expected only me to learn. The actual shocker was when my team's Head/CEO comes to me after my marriage & asks me if I know how to cook & time & again brings it up! If it's not cooking then taking care of a child. I know & have heard so many people talk if they see a man taking care of a child & the mother sitting & doing nothing or probably eating (Especially in marriages). Talks like - What kin...

Raavana an Unsung Hero

Since school days we have learnt ‘Good Triumphs Over Evil’. We have always been taught this proverb in Ram – Raavan story. My question is have we misunderstood Raavan or did we not bother to dig a little deeper. From what I already know Ravana was a learned poet and a musician. Being a Brahmin, he was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He is the composer of Shiva Tandava which is the most valuable work in praise of Lord Shiva. On becoming happy with Ravana’s devotion, Lord Shiva handed over Aatma Ling (the soul of Shiva) as a boon to Ravana.  His ten heads represent his knowledge of the six shastras and the four Vedas. That’s not it; Ravana was a great ruler. Ravana was an efficient king, and under his rule, Lanka was called Sone Ki Lanka, which was the most prestigious period of Lanka in history. Under his rule, the best of all architects, Vishwakarma, built Lanka. In Sri Lanka, Ravana is considered as a God and is worshipped. Can such an educated man be so bad that we have...

How My Life Changed After Marriage!

“Shaadi karke phas gaya” or "Zor Ka Jhatka” are some lyrics that come to my mind when I think of Bollywood songs post marriage. Not claiming that there are no happy songs but these are songs definitely ring a bell! Before writing this article I did some research, it was sad to find out that all the blogs majorly spoke only about how marriage negatively changes your life. My story is different!  Just to give a background I have been married only since 9 months, so I am still a newbie. I am a Hindu (GSB) Mangalorean girl married to Sikh boy. Like they say, ‘You don’t marry a man, you marry the family’.   It has always been a debatable subject whether one should stay separate or within-laws post marriage.  I live with my in-laws (including brother in law) & my husband’s grandmother. Career wise I am in the field of Content - Digital Marketing & have a full time job. Also, just a heads up before I got married I hardly ever cooked or did a lot of house work (I u...

Not Fair & Lovely but Dusky & Beautiful

‘Eh Kaali’ , ‘Kaali Kaluti Jali Hui Roti’ are the adjectives I have grown up with. This is the life of a dusky girl; in a world obsessed with fairness. I belong to the GSB community (Goud Saraswat Brahmin), majority of the people in my community are fair! So my struggle started right from the beginning. Throughout school I have struggled with basic things that I shouldn’t be worried about. Like – constantly looking out for options to lighten my complexion, not playing in the sun & so on. To add to that I was always called a Negro if I got even a slight tan. As a kid I used to feel very under confident & hated myself. When I entered in my teens things just got worse for me! This is the time you crave attention from the opposite gender. I knew something is wrong with my complexion as I don't get the same RESPECT like other "fair girls". It sounds strange but is completely true. Somehow lack of attention from boys had started affecting me in a negative way! The...
